Located in central Croatia within the Dinaric karst region, Plitvice Lakes National Park comprises a stepped cascade of 16 named lakes separated by natural moss, algae, and tufa (travertine) barriers. Over millennia, the dissolved calcium carbonate in the water has continually crystallized onto biological surfaces, continuously expanding the barriers at rates of approximately 1 cm per year.
Upper vs. Lower Lake Systems
The park is split into the Upper Lakes (Gornja jezera) set among dense primeval beech forests, and the Lower Lakes (Donja jezera) carved into a sheer canyon of porous white limestone that culminates at Veliki Slap (Great Waterfall, 78m drop).

Optical Color Variations & Mineral Content
The distinctive turquoise and emerald coloration of the water changes constantly depending on the angle of sunlight, the concentration of dissolved minerals, and microscopic diatom algae. Early morning light before 09:00 AM provides high contrast without severe solar glare along the boardwalks.
